Up on the slopes of Signal Hill and Lion’s Head, Tamboerskloof is a sought after neighbourhood. This is one of the few city bowl suburbs to have been spared the onslaught of degradation associated with city centres like Hillbrow in Johannesburg or Sunnyside in Pretoria. Stooped in history, it is a quaint neighbourhood with a mixed culture.
The architectural design in Tamboerskloof is still in keeping with what would be expected of historic Cape Town. Victorian homes with broekie lace covered verandas, sixties style blocks of flats and art deco blocks.
De Lorentz Street, just a block away from Table Mountain cable car station, has a few blocks of high-rise flats with views over the city bowl and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.
Tamboerskloof is very much a focal point in Cape Town's CBD. Driving up Kloof Street you can access places like Clifton, Houtbay and De Waal Drive towards Llandudno. Alternatively, you can walk to the vibrant city bowl and into Green market Square and Parliament Square with its squirrels, or even up on a nature trail into the mountain.
One major advantage of Tamboerskloof is that for some reason the wind is not as much of an issue as other suburbs, possibly ascribed to the high-rise buildings.
Property value in Tamboerskloof is stable due to the fact that it is an old established mixed use residential suburb. Property prices cater for the full spectrum of income groups, exclusive to middle income and returns on rental income are very good. Properties fetch from R300 000 to in excess of R5,000,000.
The suburb does in some way lack schools but let this not detract from the vibrant yet quiet living Tamboerskloof offers.
It is by no means a typical holiday destination, but living in Tamboerskloof is recommended for someone who has done all the sightseeing and just wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg. You will still have the benefit of access to all the beaches and amenities on offer.
