Situated on the northern side of the Primrose Hills is the sunny suburb of Wychwood. In an era when gold mining was the primary source and driving factor for suburbs being established suburbs like Wychwood became crucial to the servicing of mines and allied industries.

A mixed property usage attracts a large income base to the suburb with the property usage consisting of freestanding homes, townhouses and apartments. Townhouse complexes tend to be more resent in architecture which has brought with it an even younger generation with the more middle-aged families residing in the larger freestanding homes.

Many of the older homes are being sold off to developers and these are now making way for more upmarket sectional title developments which is a good indication that there is still a good degree of demand for homes in Wychwood. This revival in demand has the positive effect of driving property values to keep up with the rest of the property market on the east rand.

Many of the homes higher up on the Primrose Hills have some spectacular views over the Johannesburg CBD in the evening which is somewhat unique to the suburb.

Today mostly the allied industries remain and they too have diversified into other industrial manufacturing markets forming part of the greater and major industrial hub of the East rand. These are industrial suburbs such as Driehoek, Heriotdale, City Deep and Village Deep.

This puts Wychwood in an advantageous position to be servicing a number of these industrial hubs and then also commercial hubs in suburbs like Bedfordview, Sandton, Rivonia and Melrose to mention a few. The major junction, Gilooly’s Interchange makes it possible for residents to Wychwood to travel to these destinations with minimal fuss.

Of course Wychwood would not be a residential suburb without schools. Here is a list of some of the popular schools nearby; Wychwood Primary School, Hoerskool Primrose, Assumption Convent School and Primrose Technical High School.
