The Portuguese pioneer Vasco Da Gama was the first European man to set foot on the soil of St Helena Bay and the Portuguese Government erected a monument in his honour.
Port Owen is a suburb of Velddrif on the Cape West coast.
Port Owen took a total of 15 years to construct which entailed dredging waterways and sea beds and then, constructing an island with rocks. Thus the resort is named after Mr H Owen Wiggins Junior.
Situated in St Helena Bay, Port Owen should give an indication as to the surrounding nature and setting. Although man made, Port Owen is popular with holiday makers from across South Africa enjoying the safety of the bay and amenities on offer for tourists.
Port Owen was the first deep-sea marina to be developed for residential use and has in some way been a model and reference for other developments on the coastlines of South Africa. Located at the mouth of the Great Berg River which adds to the entertainment for residents and holiday makers.
Port Owen has expanded and grown to the extent that malls and amenities had to be included in the development plan thus there are malls, restaurants and other amenities which are found in large cities.
The main attraction is of course sailing which is controlled by the Port Owen Harbour Authorities. There is thus a social niche around the sailing fraternity in Port Owen. Second to this is the sea and then fishing which is targeted more towards Laaiplek which is a popular fishing spot for serious anglers.
Towns which add to the demand of Port Owen and the attractions in the region include Rocherpan Nature Reserve, West Coast National Park, and West Coast Biosphere Nature Reserve,
For avid bird watching there is the RAMSAR Berg River estuary
