Paternoster means “Our Father” derived from prayers of stranded or shipwrecked Portuguese sailors running aground along the coast.
The town is more a fishing village than a town and attracts tourists on weekend breaks from Cape Town and Vredenburg. Seafood lovers are lured to the town for its abundance in crayfish, and other fresh fish served in taverns and boutique restaurants.
The architectural style in this quaint village has retained its roots as fisherman’s cottages only at greater scales and modern materials. Permanent residents enjoy the laid back unspoilt nature, whales that come to calve in season and the surrounding attractions. For permanent residents, it is just as important to have an investment that grows, and that is certainly a fact for property in the town.
The holiday home market is exceptionally lucrative and buoyant. Reasons for this are the distance of the town from Cape Town and Vredenburg at 145 km from Cape Town and 15 km from Vredenburg respectively. Listed in the top ten list of desirable Cape coastal hotspots should draw buyers.
The pricing structure of property in the town is broad. One affordable option is to invest in a vacant stand and build your dream holiday home according to your lifestyle needs. Vacant stands are reasonably priced.
One thing the village can boast is the lack of commercialization as there are no large high-rise beach-front hotels that mar the beauty and quaintness of the village.
Permanent residents have access to schools located in Vredenburg and a few in the village.
There are malls in Vredenburg that will take care of shopping needs and commercial entertainment.
Pensioners flock to the village due to the favourable weather conditions and tranquillity, and of course, their homes get passed down through generations.
