Oriel is an affluent suburb located in the East Rand. It is one of the suburbs of Bedfordview which is in itself an exclusive affluent upmarket suburb.
The suburb is another of the “Rand Lord” suburbs established to cater for the mining magnates responsible for most of the affluent suburbs in Johannesburg.
Old money and opulence are the order of the day when looking at property values even by Houghton or Houghton Estate standards.
These mansions are architectural master pieces for the wealthy and demand is thus high for the properties. This also stems from the location of the suburb which is prime by any definition. Central to commercial hubs like for example the JSE, teaching hospitals, Sandton with its law chambers and the home of the countries commercial hub and of course Rosebank with its exclusive malls and retail outlets. These are all important to residents of suburbs like Oriel and then of course access to the amenities like the OR Tambo Airport, major freeways and schools.
Property values are high starting at the minimum R3 mil mark for freehold homes and at least half that for apartments which are all exclusive offering gyms, indoor pools and for some massage rooms. Every whim is catered for and is almost all within walking distance.
Many of the surrounding suburbs draw on the popularity of Oriel to attract interest and this is also a benefit to the suburbs in lending to a stable market overall.
In this price range the letting market shrinks considerably but there are prospects for letting within the apartment sector worth exploring.
For families with children there are public and private schools some of which are highly acclaimed for their respective scholastic acumen like;
Assumption Convent School
St Benedict’s College
Sunnyridge Primary School
Athlone Girls High School
Major roads which make the suburb a prime address are;
Van Buuren Road
The N3 N12 interchange North and South, East and West
Nicol Road
Albertina Sisulu Road
