Dating back to 1886 Malvern was part of Doornfontein, Malvern was named Malvern, after Malvern Hills in Worcestershire.
Malvern, established in 1904, is a mixed-use residential suburb in the Johannesburg CBD. Malvern has its roots in the mining era and was established more towards the tail-end of the major gold rush which indicates that the suburb grew as a result of allied industries within the mining industry.
The mixed-use of property in the suburb, consisting of a greater portion of sectional-title apartments and then the remainder made up of freehold homes and commercial property caters to a broad demographic in age, race and income groups.
After experiencing a slight decline in buyer interest over the past few years, Malvern property values have had a steady increase and is now considered a worthwhile investment suburb. Apartments and commercial property are at the opposing end of the scale that creates a good middle segment in the freehold end of the market. Apartments have a broad pricing range and will attract young bachelors, small families and young couples and the freehold home market will cater to the middle-class with a variety of architectural styles on offer, like classic conventional, period style homes, modern apartments and the lower end of the market. One can consider apartments as a good investment, as this segment appeals to the broadest demographic made of of the younger generation and will have the most sales movement as the younger generation start families and generally remain within the suburb for reasons like familiarity and stable job opportunities.
The other reason, of course, is the prime location of the suburb with relation to the industrial and commercial precincts accessible on Stanhope Road and Jules Street which connect the suburb to Denver with its large industrial precinct, Herriotdale and Cleveland and the commercial precincts in the CBD of Johannesburg, New Doornfontein and City and Suburban.
Numerous schools are catering for education like Malvern Primary School, Malvern High School, Jeppe High School for Boys and Denver Primary School.
Malls catering for retail needs are Bedford Centre, Eastgate Mall and Jozi Mall.
