The south western region of Johannesburg like most of Johannesburg was founded on the treasure trove of gold deposits on a reef hence the old name of The Reef as Johannesburg was known.
Thus many of the suburbs were established to serve the mines and commerce.
Today, driving on the modern N1 Western Bypass it is a completely different picture to the 1800-1900’s. Suburbs west of Johannesburg by today’s standards command an equal status in demand for property and growth in market value.
