Randfontein was established on the West Rand along with other towns, after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand.

Mining is still very much a source of income for many households in the suburb. Naturally, around mining, their needs to be allied industries to support the running of the mines which has increased the number of employment opportunities thus attracting more residents to the town and suburb.

The suburb has room for expansion as there are tracts of vacant land that have not been developed to add to the existing market that consists of sectional-title townhouses and freehold homes. At present, the suburb is a lower-middle-class suburb with freehold home selling for roughly R 8 K and townhouses for an average of R 450 000. There are farms in the suburb that are well-priced and successfully running businesses that also influence the general property values in a small part.

The undeveloped land is not an indication of a lack of growth but rather a slight downturn in the current economic climate with the mining industry. Demand for homes is matched by sales which do indicate growth in the value of properties.

The general architecture of homes tends to be more conventional with some homes at the upper end of the scale having a more modern architecture.

There are schools and malls in and neat the suburb. The schools are Randfontein Primary School, Randfontein High School, Brandvlei Primary Schools and Wescol College. Malls near the suburb are Randfontein Shopping Mall, Tambotie Mall and Village Square Shopping Mall.

Residents that work outside of Randfontein have easy access to the industrial precincts in Boltonia, Factoria, Chamdor and Aureus along Lazar Avenue and the R28. The same is applicable for access to the commercial nodes further afield in Roodepoort, Krugersdorp and some employees and employers may travel to the north of Johannesburg.
