Bedfordview’s rural origin is taken up in the coat of arms which depicts an Eland holding a water fountain. After gold mining in the area had depleted the sources the land was divided up and many of the miners bought the land which was later renamed the Geldenhuis Estates.
Bedfordview falls within the East Rand of Gauteng. Bedfordview is an affluent suburb which is well established and highly sought after. Bedfordview is close to all the amenities which make the suburb unique.
Synonymous with Bedfordview is Eastgate Mall and Bedford Gardens, which was for many years seen as the benchmark in malls.
Bedfordview has seen a steady increase in property value due to the exclusivity and proximity to suburbs like Sandton, Houghton and Rosebank.
Many of the businesses which felt the need to urbanize have settled for Bedfordview because it is relatively close to the OR Thambo Airport and major highways making it easily accessible.
Recently Bedfordview has seen a fair amount of re-development which has injected the property market with fresh ideas on old building and the use of space which is at a premium as there is no vacant land to further develop in Bedfordview thus there has been a revival of apartment building going up or being renovated in Bedfordview with hefty price tags for the serious investors. Bedfordview was along with Houghton the preferred address for doctors whom had business at Johannesburg General Hospital or the today Charlotte Maxeke Hospital with this still evident in Bedfordview today.
The suburb is well established with a colourful history and schools in the suburb are sought after. Here is a list of schools in Bedfordview:
- Bedfordview High School
- Reddam Bedford High School
- Crawford College Bedfordview
- Bedfordview Primary School
