The farm layout:
The farm is mainly irrigation land with pivots with water from the Vaal River. There are 4 pivots which irrigate 114Ha. A pecan nut orchard of 8 ha, 4 years in age and equipped with micro sprinklers. The design of the water supply to the pivots, was upgraded to supply 12mm water per day to the crops. This was done to give more water in a shorter time period and to lower the risk of load shedding. Climate
Barkly West normally receives about 325-385mm of rain per year, with most rainfall occurring mainly during summer. It receives the lowest amount in July and the highest in February. The monthly distribution of the average daily maximum temperature ranges from 20°C in June to 36°C in January.
